The Australian Paralympic Team’s official competition and casual wear for Paris 2024 was unveiled in Sydney today, 17 May 2024.
In 2022 Paralympics Australia’s official partner Belgravia Apparel commenced the creative and technical process to outfit the 170 qualifying athletes, and 150 officials, representing Australia across 18 sports at the Paris games later this year.
This equates to the design and manufacture of more than 23,000 individual items, including almost 100 different competition products.
Mike Keeley, BA’s National Account Manager says:
“This has been a highly rewarding experience for our team. Meeting with every athlete during the design process provided opportunity to discuss individual impairments, and for the athletes to share their specific needs.”
“It’s pleasing to see the project come to fruition. Our vast experience and skill in delivering on complex, large scale apparel projects held us in good stead.”
“It’s certainly been a career highlight to be involved with these dedicated, elite athletes in their preparation for competing on the highest world stage.”
“And very satisfying to know the meticulous effort poured into the design has paid off. It’s not just about the colour palette and overall look. The priority for us was to deliver garments athletes feel comfortable in that are tailored to their body shape and impairment and will ultimately help to maximise their performance.”
Deliverables
An athlete apparel kit will include up to 52 items:
- Accessories x 11 (e.g. towel, headwear, drink bottle, sweat bands)
- Casual x 25 items (including medal podium wear)
- Training x 2 items
- Compression x 2 items
- Competition x 6-12 items depending on the specific sport.
Design Specifications
Competition Wear:
- Inspiration for the final design evolved from the indigenous “Journey” design worn during the Rio and Tokyo Paralympics.
- The unique design combines Australia’s traditional green and gold palette, which feature in both a ‘tonal’ and ‘contrast’ colourway.
- Garments have been carefully crafted and feature panelled construction and overlock stitching to maximise performance, freedom of movement and comfort.
- High performance fabrics have been used across all competition wear, ensuring maximum comfort for athletes:
- Air-O-Lite
High filament vent knit structure with optimal ventilation and moisture wicking.
- Dynamesh
Lightweight mesh structure with superior moisture wicking and breathability.
- Supa Stretch
Filament blended yarn offering supreme stretch, moisture management and comfort.
- Tekmesh
Filament elastane mesh structure, delivering maximum moisture wicking and breathability.
- X-Skin
Hydrophobic poly, minimal water retention and four-way stretch for greater flexibility.
Casual Wear:
- BA designed this range to be the most ‘adaptive’ ever worn by an Australian Paralympic Team.
- Garments maximise athlete accessibility via strategic placement of extra-wide openings, extra-long (and magnetic) zippers, and for added comfort feature anti-irritation neck tapes and waistbands.
- Featuring on trend Parisian style design, the colour palette is ‘white and light’, and includes woven badges and silicone linear prints.
